A Wireless Future – at what cost?
A “Time Out” must be taken in building the 3rd generation mobile network, until health and environmental effects of the new system have been investigated. First do the research, then build, demands among others assistant professor Olle Johansson at the Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm.
Never before has a whole population been exposed to such an extensive microwave radiation as in the creation of the wireless IT Sweden of today. But who takes the responsibility for the long-term consequences for environment and health? The Swedish Parliament and the Swedish Government? The IT/telecom companies and their shareholders?

Switzerland adopts strict limits for Cell Towers and Power Lines

MICROWAVE NEWS, The Italians and now the Swiss have the guts to decide what is technically and feasible in adapting to the precautionary principle. The need for caution is prompted by "credible indications" that chronic, low-level exposures may be harmful.

The Swiss governement has adopted stringent new standards for public exposures  from power lines and from towers used for mobile communications and radio and TV broadcasting. The new rules, which took effect on February the 1, are similar to those in Russia and in China and are mong the toughest in the world.

The Swiss standard according to The Federal agency for Environment, Forests and Landscape (BUWAL):
Ordinance on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection

Mobile Phone Towers, exposure limits:
            at 900 MHz    4,0 V/m or 4,2 µW/cm²
Radio and TV transmitters, exposure limits:
            3,0 V/m or 2,4 µW/cm²
            8,5 V/m or 20 µW/cm² for long and middle-wave
Magnetic Field from Power Lines, Substations etc where people spend time:
            1 µT or 10 mG
The Italian, public exposure limits for locations where people spend more than 4 hours/day. January 2, 1999:
Decreto 10 settembre 1998 n.381

Mobile Phone Towers and Broadcast    6 V/m or 10 µW/cm²
     for other RF/MW exposures:
         at 3 MHz-3 GHz        100 µW/cm²
        at 3 GHz-300 GHz    400 µW/cm²

Russia, public exposure limit:
            at 900 MHz    3,0 V/m or 2,4 µW/cm²

China, public exposure limits:
            at 900 MHz    5,0 V/m or 6,6 µW/cm²

ICNIRP, public exposure limit:
            at 900 MHz    450 µW/cm²

25 November, 1999. Has the management of Ericsson developed an emphatic dysfunction?
Per Segerbäck one of the Electrosensitive ASIC designers at Ericsson has now been fired by the company. In the early nineties he and 9 others in a work group of 12 got electrosensitive at his work at ELLEMTEL. Per has continued to work from home, but in October his modem connection to the company was cut off. The union at Ericsson is supporting him and legal actions will probably be taken.

ERICSSON FIRES ELECTRICALLY SENSITIVE PER SEGERBÄCK

Long time electrically sensitive employee Per Segerbäck ( read about Per on: http://www.feb.se/ARTICLES/ellemtel.html ) has been working  for Ericsson from his home for many years until November 22, 1999 when he was suddenly fired.  The reason given: His electric sensitivity.
In Sweden a company rarely fires anyone unless for very good reasons such as there being no work. It is very rare  for a company to fire for reasons such as an employees health problems or handicap --  indeed it is illegal to discriminate against people with handicaps and indeed fire them for such reasons. No doubt the Swedish Handicap Ombudsman will have his say on this also. For these reasons, the largest  Swedish daily newspaper Dagens Nyheter November 25 1999 had a prominent article on this very unusual behavior from a Swedish company. Swedish radio, wire services and  other newspapers featured the story also.
A spokesman for Ericsson, Mr.Göran Wittlock who is represented on the board  of directors of Ericsson and thus speaks from on high in the company, admits that Per became electrically sensitive at his workplace, but that Per cannot work there anymore. He told the newspaper that Per Segerbäck  who must work from home, is not allowed anymore to work from home because he has to work  "in a team", but Per Segerbäck has told FEB that his work has always been in a team and it has worked fine the last ten years. He is shocked and does not understand the sudden change in company policy.

The union (SIF) spokesman Lars-Erik Sjölund was flabbergasted. He told the newspaper that Per is doing exactly the kind of highly qualified work that Ericsson are in dire need of. It is absurd to fire him for not being able to work at the office. We have people working from their home in northern Sweden, Why could not Per work from his home which is a lot closer? May be since Ericsson makes mobile phones and antennae, it might seem strange to the customers that Ericsson sells these items on the one hand, and on the other has employees who are electrically sensitive --  who knows he says?

The sudden change in Ericsson policy might have its explanation in that an English law firm has told mobile phone manufacturers that they better watch out: If the mobile phone manufacturers repeat the mistakes of the tobacco industry - concealing and manipulating scientific information about health hazards --  they might find themselves in the same position.
Could it be argued, in future legal suits, that Ericsson, having had electrically sensitive individuals employed, such as Per who is so sensitive to microwaves, that he cannot even travel into the center of any town, that they should have been more aware of the health hazards of mobile phones and the microwaves they emit? Have they received legal advice to get rid of him? Who knows?  It is clear that the decision is a central one direct from the board of Ericsson. And the decision has given a lot of bad publicity for the company.
Due to the ever increasing blanket of elektrosmog, Per Segerbäck has been forced to move further and further away from Stockholm. He is unusually sensitive, but what about the rest of the population that appear to be "healthy", have they had any symptoms, what about the people that live in the elektrosmog, the individuals, many young children and teenagers who speak on mobile phones daily, what about them?
No one has really connected the most recent developments to microwaves.

The last two years, we have had an almost epidemic illness called "burnout" or severe stress that put people on sick leave from two months to two years. Some never return to their old work. Newspapers constantly revert to this subject. Swedes have more mobile phones than anyone in the world. They assume that they are harmless. But American scientist professor Henry Lai says that microwaves have the same stressing effect on living things as loud sound has.

People have always worked hard, but why do they suddenly get burned out and totally incapacitated for months and years? Could it be that the additional stress of microwaves and other electrosmog, gives an additional stress factor to the body that the body cannot cope with?
We have also found out recently that very weak microwaves from mobile telephones can open the blood brain barrier and allow toxins into the brain. http://www.medfak.lu.se/cr/search/eng/proj/177.html
Maybe this toxic inflow into the brain, contributes to the body becoming stressed and "burned out".
The most recent report includes teenagers being stressed in similar fashion. It is explained with psycho social stress, but no one seems to suspect the mobile phones they all have without exception. Not yet.
One thing is for sure, firing Per Segerbäck is not going to make all these problems disappear.

ES JOURNALIST RECEIVES AWARD
Aftonbladet (Swedish evening newspaper) reports that the very prestigeous Swedish "The Big Journalist Award" was awarded to a Journalist Gunnar Lindstedt who works for Svenska Dagbladet (conservative daily newspaper). Gunnar Lindstedt had exposed a finacial fraud in a company called "Trustor". His exposure of the fraud, was considered a journalistic feat that shook the financial world, said the awarding committee.

Only the week before, Gunnar Lindstedt wrote about his own Electric Sensitivity in an article in Svenska Dagbladet and how he copes with it.  The paper had several pages on work related problems such as RSI (Repetative strain injury), which in Sweden is called "mouse-arm".One million Swedes are supposed to suffer from this problem according to one article in the paper. In his own article, Lindstedt wrote that he only uses a manual type writer and avoids heavily electrified and computerized environments. One can exist without modern technology and excell it seems.

PROPERTY COMPANIES STOP MOBILE PHONE ANTENNAS ON ROOFS
Svenska Dagbladet (daily conservative newspaper in Stockholm Sweden) reports that two extremely large property owners ( Poseidon and Bostadsbolaget), in Gothenburg, Sweden have stopped the setting up of any more mobile telephone antennas on their buildings. They have been put up in secrecy, on roofs and on facades: the broadcasting antennas for mobile phones From the base station positioned in the basement, a cable runs all the way up the building. "We are talking about microwave radiation and even if it is below the norms, it is not zero. Today we do not know anything of the long term effects", says professor Yngve Hamnerius at Chalmers, the technical university in Gothenburg, Sweden. He will embark on a study how much we are affected by microwave radiation. Even if  the people who live in the house with the antenna on the roof, get exposed to less microwave radiation than a person speaking on a mobile phone, they are exposed for a longer period. BLINDING PHONES?
Aftonbladet (evening newspaper) reports that two men, one Anders Olsson aged 38, and another Krister Nyberg, both fom the northern town of Sundsvall in Sweden, became blind in the eye positioned closest to the cell phone. Both have used their phones extensiveley for many years. Krister Nyberg's problem started after eight years of extensive usage. He had intense pain in the one eye and had to stay in dark rooms. Doctors informed him that he had ulcers on the cornea, but could not explain why. Then his vision became blurred suddenly. It was discovered that he had a blood clot  in the eye which could not be saved. He is now blind in one eye.

Nyberg later came in contact with Anders Olsson, who also had a blood clot in the eye due to extensive cell phone usage. Both men are convinced, according to the article that their partial blindness is due to the use of cell phones. Why else would  only the eye closest to the cell phone be affected they say. In the same town, there are another two individuals who also supposedly have  lost an eye due to cell phone usage.
(Reporter: Caroline Hougner, Aftonbladet, Stockholm).

Comment: We must be observant on the possible effects from microwaves from cellphones. It is in Sweden  Norway and Finland one should be most observant. That is where we have  most cellphones per person int he world and where they have been in use over a longer period than elsewhere. We in Scandinavia are apparently only too happy to be guineapigs for the rest of  the world! We shall keep you informed!
